LNA 501 Latin America: Past, Present and Future Trends (3-0)3

This course introduces students to the historical development of Latin American societies, states, economies and political systems. It focuses on the social structures, different state forms and the economic problems of the Latin American countries in an historical perspective. Each week, we will explore a general theme of an historical period in detail, together with case studies (mostly larger countries in the region) that detail and illustrate the key issues under analysis. We will compare and contrast different interpretations of Latin American societies, states, economies and political systems, and lay out strengths and weaknesses of each interpretation. We will also understand the diversity of economic, social and political structures in Latin America and undertake comparisons between different countries in this region.
